What Is the role of a calibrated load cell in Proof Load Testing?
Understanding Its Function and Importance for using the right load measuring instrument for Proof Load testing in the maritime environment.
Introduction
In the maritime industry, ensuring that lifting equipment is safe and compliant is a critical responsibility of vessel and ship superintendents. Because lifting failures onboard can lead to severe injuries, operational delays, and costly compliance issues, accurate load testing becomes a mandatory component of vessel maintenance.
One tool plays the most important role in achieving reliable measurement results: the load cell.
What Is a Load Cell (Load Measuring Instrument)?
A load cell is a highly precise force-measuring device that converts mechanical force (such as tension, compression, or load) into an electrical signal. This signal is interpreted to show the exact weight or force applied.
Load cells come in multiple forms—such as tension load cells, compression load cells, shackle-type load cells, and wireless load cells—each catering to different lifting and load-testing conditions.
The Role of Load Cells in Proof Load Testing
Load cells are essential in conducting Proof load testing activities to verify whether lifting equipment can safely perform its rated capacity. They provide real-time, highly accurate force measurement during:
- Crane load testing
- Lifeboat davit testing
- Winch brake tests
- Cargo gear testing
- Lifting appliance certification
- Water bag load tests
- Bollard pull testing (specific load cell variants)
How to use load cells in load testing processes
- Preparation and Pre-Check: Verify the load cell has a valid calibration certificate and sufficient battery power to ensure accuracy and safety compliance.
- Rigging setup: Install the load cell vertically between the crane hook and the container/ equipment slings using safety shackles at both ends to prevent sensor damage.
- Zeroing: Hoist the rigging just enough to remove slack, then press “Tare” on the wireless display to cancel out the weight of the slings and shackles.
- Execution: Slowly lift the container until the target proof load is reached on the display, then hold the position for five minutes to properly stress-test the structure.
- Post test: Safely lower the container and perform NDT inspection on key welds to check for cracks before recording the peak load data for the final report.
Ensure every onboard lifting operation is safe and compliant.
Don’t let inaccurate measurements, last-minute inspections, or equipment non-compliance disrupt your vessel operations.
