Why Pad Eyes Installed Indoors requires periodic Non Destructive Testing (NDT)

Pad eyes are essential structural lifting points used across manufacturing plants, workshops, warehouses, and industrial facilities. Because many pad eyes are installed indoors, some operators assume they face minimal risk and therefore require less inspection. However, this assumption is not only inaccurate—it can be dangerous.

Whether installed outside under harsh weather or inside a controlled environment, pad eyes experience the same mechanical stresses every time a load is lifted.

Indoor Pad Eyes Aren’t Automatically “Safe”

While indoor pad eyes are protected from rain, UV, and corrosion, environmental conditions are not the main cause of structural failure.

Most pad eye failures come from:

  1. Repeated lifting cycles
  2. Overloading
  3. Poor welding quality
  4. Hidden cracks growing over time due to environmental conditions
  5. Inadequate maintenance history or inspections

This means even the cleanest, driest, most controlled indoor facility cannot prevent fatigue-related failures if the pad eye experiences repetitive load cycles.

Fatigue Is Cycle-Based, Not Weather-Based

One of the biggest misconceptions in the lifting industry is that fatigue is caused by harsh weather, corrosion, or outdoor exposure. In reality, metal fatigue is fundamentally caused by repeated stress cycles, NOT climate or weather. Every time a pad eye lifts a load, the material undergoes tension and compression. Over thousands of cycles, even at loads below the rated capacity, microscopic cracks may start to form.

Why Non Destructive Testing (NDT) Is Crucial for Indoor Pad Eyes

NDT methods help identify cracks, deformation, weld defects, and structural weaknesses long before failure occurs. NDT ensures indoor pad eyes remain safe by: Detecting early fatigue cracks, Verifying welding quality and structural alignment, Preventing catastrophic lifting failures, Supporting periodic audits and safety compliance, and Maintaining safe lifting operations
